Novak Djokovic told Serena Williams it is "a huge honor" to be joining her on the history list with 23 Grand Slams. On Sunday, Djokovic saw off Casper Ruud in straight sets in the French Open final to become the first-ever male player to win 23 Grand Slams.
Williams, who retired after last year's US Open, won 23 Grand Slams during her astonishing career. Since then, Djokovic has won 2022 Wimbledon and this year's Australian Open and French Open. "Obviously, Grand Slam is a Grand Slam. Four biggest tournaments that we have in the history of our sports and every single player dreams of being in this stage and winning the trophy at least once in their career.I am beyond fortunate in my life to win 23 times Grand Slams. It's an incredible incredible feeling," Djokovic said.
Djokovic, who turned 36 last month, has won the opening two Grand Slams of the 2023 season and there is no doubt in his mind that he can still play at the highest level and win Slams.
With that being said, Djokovic doesn't see a reason why he would walk away from the game right now. "Of course [the] journey is still not over. I feel, you know, if I'm winning slams, why even think about, you know, ending the career that already has been going on for 20 years.So I still feel motivated, I still feel inspired to play the best tennis on these tournaments the most, you know, Grand Slams. Those are the ones that count I guess the most in history of our sport," Djokovic said.
