We all love crafting, but when it comes to the UK, which place takes the craftiest crown?
To mark National Sewing Day (13th June) Liberty London commissioned a survey to discover the best destinations across the UK for crafting. The report analysed UK cities, looking at factors such as the number of craft markets and shops, crafting workshops and events, as well as the enthusiasm for crafting in each city.
London came out on top, with a large variety of craft markets and shops, as well as being the best place to find a diverse range of crafting activities and communities. It's also a great city to study art-based subjects thanks to the number of top universities, such as Central Saint Martins, which is renowned for its excellence in arts, design and fabrics.
Leicester came in second place, with the most craft shops per square mile, some great courses for learning new skills, and also as the most popular crafting city on Tiktok.
Brighton took the third spot, being the best city for fabric-based crafting, thanks to its growing number of independent craft shops and also thrift and charity shops that are helping to inspire and support its thriving arts scene.
The report also named Edinburgh as the thriftiest city and Glasgow as the top city for sewing, with Brighton the place with the largest crocheting hub.
If you're into pottery, Croydon is the area to be. Shows like The Great Pottery Throwdown have created a rise in interest in all things clay, and thanks to its proximity to London, there are plenty of ceramic painting and pottery classes to try nearby.
Overall, the UK has a thriving crafting scene, with a wide range of activities and communities available in each city. However, London was the clear winner, offering the most diverse and dynamic crafting experiences in the country.
