World Test Championship finalists Australia and India have received heavy fines for a slow over rate following the Test match at The Oval.

India was adjudged to have been five overs short of the target despite time allowances, while Australia was found to be four overs short.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over if their team fails to bowl within the allotted time frame.

This resulted in the Indian team forfeiting all their match fees, with Australia losing 80 per cent of their match fees.

Furthermore, India's opening batsman Shubman Gill faces further sanctions after appearing to criticize the decision to give him out for a catch by Cameron Green that seemed not to have been taken cleanly.

His social media post seemed to lament the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test after television umpire Richard Kettleborough ruled that Cameron Green's catch to remove Gill off the bowling of Scott Boland had been taken cleanly.

This post has been seen as breaching the ICC'S article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.

The 23-year-old was fined a further 15 per cent of his match fee, meaning he has to pay back money due to his overall 115 per cent fine including the team sanction.

Following its defeat in its second consecutive ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, India will move into its third WTC cycle (2023-2025) on a Tour of the West Indies, which begins on 12 July.
