Strictly Come Dancing choreographer Jason Gilkison has announced he is now a British citizen.

The Australian former professional ballroom dancer began dancing when he was just four years old at his grandparent's dance studio in Perth, before going on to carve a career as a dancer and later a choreographer.

In 2008 he became a contributing choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance Australia, before joining the American version.

Then, in 2014, he joined BBC's Strictly as its head of choreography.

Now, decades after first arriving in London, he has revealed he's become a citizen of his adopted country.

'So, earlier this week exactly 40 years after Peta (Roby, his dance partner) and I first arrived in London as a couple of 17 year olds ready to take on the dance world, I've become a British citizen ????,' he posted on Instagram alongside two photos.

One was a selfie with his husband, James Carney, with the other showing Jason holding his citizenship certificate after the ceremony.

'It's such a full circle moment for me to continue my Scottish Grandads dancing legacy over here, and now the hubby and I have two beautiful places we can call home ??????????.'

He then included a hashtag which read: '#aussiepom.'

One of the many creative masterminds behind some of the show's most iconic routines, last year Jason spoke to Metro.co.uk about his time on the show, and even revealed his favourite ever routines he'd helped put together.

'My first Blackpool routine I did about 10 years ago to Young Hearts Run Free, it wasn't that spectacular, but there was everybody ages 7-70 in that routine,' he said.

'We had a floor full of ballroom dancers from all over the country, I think that summed up what Strictly means to me. That has to be one of my favourites.'

He also said Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice's couple's choice would 'always stay in my mind' and that he would 'never forget being in the room watching that'.

Strictly Come Dancing is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
