The All-Star Game is getting worse every year. There's zero competition, and some have even called it a revered layup line. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is well aware of this, and he has some plans to revamp the All-Star Game that could be implemented in 2025.
Speaking with Dan Patrick, Silver said that the league will still implement the East vs. West format at next year's All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis.
"One of the things we're looking at for next year is returning to the East vs. West format, the more traditional format. I mean, we definitely need to do something to spruce it up a bit," Silver said.
The NBA might also revamp the All-Star Game format, and one of the things they're looking at is the USA vs. the World matchup. Originally, such a format was implemented in the Rising Stars Challenge.
"An idea that's come up in the past is doing the Ryder Cup style, except not just the US versus Europe, [rather] the US versus the World," Silver continued. "One of the reasons we hadn't done that historically was there's an imbalance because even as the number of international players grows, it's still far less than half. But I think to me as we look to make it more engaging for fans, that shouldn't be the sole reason we don't do it. I think we could add additional All-Stars. There's something we could do."
Fans and analysts have been coming up with ideas on how to improve the All-Star Weekend. Some have even suggested bringing professional dunkers and viral influencers to the Slam Dunk Contest and 3-Point Shootout. Others want the All-Star Weekend to be moved to the summer.
This could be good for the All-Star game. After all, players are concerned about their health, especially since the game is held right in the middle of the season when the stakes are still high. During the summer, NBA players play a lot of pickup games anyway. As such, a summer All-Star game could serve as their workout and also provide entertainment for the fans.
It could also potentially be more competitive, which is something we haven't seen in an All-Star game since the early '10s.
