A former top adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky has lashed out at Ukrainians celebrating the death of a Russian citizen in a shark attack in Egypt.

"Judging by the number (and quality) of jokes about a Russian man killed by a shark, dehumanisation is already here," said Oleksiy Arestovych, who worked for Mr Zelensky between 2020 and 2022.

"If (dehumanisation) is here, in you, then you have lost. to banal, grey, boring evil," he added.

The death of the man, identified by Russian media as Vladimir Popov, was widely celebrated by Ukrainians and supporters on social media.

"A little bit of positive news," wrote one user based in Kyiv. "Love sharks."

"Nobody likes Russians, even sharks," a pro-Ukraine account tweeted. "Ukraine should make that shark an honoured citizen."

Paul Massaro, an official with the US Helsinki Commission, tweeted a meme mocking the incident with the caption: "Best thing I've seen all day."

Mr Arestovych received thousands of replies to his post, the majority critical. Many Ukrainians have argued Russians are collectively responsible for the war in Ukraine.

Russian media reported that Mr Popov, 23, travelled to Egypt with his father in June as a permanent resident. He was attacked and killed on Dream Beach in Hurghada on Thursday in an incident that was watched and filmed by tourists.

Egyptian fishermen caught and killed the tiger shark that reportedly attacked Mr Popov.

Local beaches in the area were subsequently closed. Russia's consul general in Hurghada, a popular tourist destination for Russians, warned swimmers to be vigilant in the water.
