Foo Fighters Dave Grohl pens letter to fans - but one phrase is causing Glastonbury 2023 excitement

It seems awfully convenient two weeks before Glastonbury that Dave Grohl would use a term that also happens to be the name of a "secret" band performing this year.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl took to the internet overnight to pen a heartfelt message to fans of the group, who are currently playing their first set of live shows after the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Josh Freese was announced late last month during a live stream of their rehearsals as the replacement for the dearly departed member of the group.

In his letter, Grohl wrote: "Hey. It's been a while. Now that we've returned from our first run of shows, I felt compelled to reach out and thank you all for being there for us. Every night when I see you singing, I sing a little bit harder. When I see you screaming, it makes me scream louder. When I see you in tears, it brings me to tears. And when I see your joy, it brings me joy."

It would be the final sentence however that has led to more speculation of a surprise appearance at Glastonbury 2023; "but I see you. and it feels good to see you, churning up these emotions together. Because we've always done this together. Time and time again. See you soon - David."

The use of the phrase "churning up" has many now to believe that it's use was an intentional, thinly veiled nod to the ongoing rumour that the band announced at Glastonbury, The Churnups, could potentially be either a secret Foo Fighters set, or the other leading candidate being Pulp, who are currently touring the UK and set to play the Isle of Wight festival a week before Glastonbury begins.

Foo Fighters headlines Glastonbury to critical praise in 2017, after their initial headlining performance in 2016 was cancelled after Grohl broke his leg during a tour stop that year. Pulp famously headlined Glastonbury in 1995, replacing then headliners The Stone Roses after John Squire injured himself - their set has gone down in Britpop folklore as their arrival at the head of the table with peers Oasis and Blur.

Glastonbury Festival 2023 begins on Wednesday June 21 2023 until Monday June 26 2023, and if you missed out on tickets, the BBC will be broadcasting more than 40 hours of TV coverage and 85 hours of radio over the long weekend - while the Glastonbury: 50 Years & Counting documentary will be re-aired after being shown last year.

The schedule for Glastonbury on the BBC is set to be released later today.
