There seems to be an almost surprising amount of under $20 Cab coming out of Napa Valley as of late. Unfortunately, much of it just isn't any good and most of those that show potential are just way too young and undeveloped. The latter is fine if you've got the space and patience, but those wines aren't really all that much of a deal all things considered.
Today we check out the latest vintage of the Costco Kirkland Rutherford Cab, a wine we've reviewed many times in the past. Luckily this is one of those rare examples that are ready to drink now.
The Kirkland Signature Series Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is available exclusively at Costco for $18.99. Like several of the Kirkland Signature wines the winemaker is Glenn Hugo.
From the bottle:
The 2019 Kirkland Signature Series Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon begins with a very pleasing aroma of ripe black cherry and other dark berry fruit, lots of attractive spice notes and a little cedar and vanilla.
Tasting the wine reveals tons of ripe juicy fruit and a smooth mouthfeel. And while it's certainly easy to drink it is a bit one dimensional. Still, this is a solid Cab at this price. I wouldn't say it's distinctively Rutherford or even Napa Valley, but it is good enough to merit the rather high price tag.
It ends dry, long and slightly chewy with maybe just a hint of that signature Rutherford dust.
