Author and podcaster Aubrey Gordon is starring in a documentary about her experiences trying to reframe the way the world thinks about fatness. "Your Fat Friend" by director Janie Finlay, features in depth interviews with Gordon, along with a birds eye view of her journey over the last few years. The film's title is a play on her internet pseudonym yrfatfriend.
In one scene we see Gordon speaking to her family about her experiences throughout childhood, such as attending a weight loss camp before she was even 11-years-old. The film also chronicles the publication of her first book, "What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat," and shows highlights from her beloved podcast Maintenance Phase.
"My aim is to provoke people to question ideas that we've held to for so long," she says in the trailer. "It is a real paradigm shift to look at someone my size and rather than thinking, I wish that person would put in more effort, thinking that person may have put in a great deal of effort, and that might have been what got them here."
Gordon also speaks on predatory practices within the wellness industry comparing it to "big tobacco." A theme that was prevalent in her second book "You Just Need to Lose Weight," which came out in 2022. At the time of it's release Gordon spoke with Teen Vogue about the motivations for breaking down myths of weight loss. "You assume that everybody else is right and you're just going to drop dead one day because you get so fat you just die," she said. "You assume other people are right that you deserve whatever treatment you're getting."
Ahead of the film's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 8th, Teen Vogue has an exclusive look at the trailer. Watch the preview of "Your Fat Friend" starring Aubrey Gordon below.
