Cuts to school service fees and extra cash for school breakfast programs will be included in next week's South Australian budget.
The government on Monday said $18.5 million would be allocated to provide families with a $100 discount on their 2024 materials and service charge and to deliver an extra 1.4 million breakfasts for children in need.
Premier Peter Malinauskas said one in three children sometimes or often skipped breakfast and one in 10 missed the meal every day.
When they do they are less engaged at school, the premier said.
"We can't ask our kids to fill their minds on an empty stomach," he said.
The breakfasts are provided free in a range of schools through KickStart for Kids and Foodbank SA.
They offer a range of food options including cereal, fresh and tinned fruit, bread, butter and spreads, sandwiches, and milk.
Budget funds will also be available to help schools establish community gardens and to buy kitchen equipment for student or parent cooking classes that promote healthy and low-cost meal options.
Mr Malinauskas said the discounts to school service fees followed similar discounts in 2022 and 2023 and came on top of other cost-of-living relief including $254 million to cut electricity bills.
He said it was clear there were families across the country that were doing it tough.
But the Liberal opposition called for the $250 energy rebates to be extended to all those not currently eligible under the joint state-federal scheme.
"So many South Australian families and businesses are doing it tough right now with soaring costs and Peter Malinauskas must guarantee these people will be supported in the state budget," opposition treasury spokesman Matt Cowdrey said.
"We must see targeted and temporary support to minimise the impact of the cost of living crisis is having on South Australians."
The SA budget will be handed down on June 15.
