Like all Port wines, the tawny variety are fortified with a type of grape brandy. Tawny ports; however, are not vintage specific, they are blends of barrel aged (sometimes decades old) ports. Because they spend a lot of time in barrel they gradually oxidize, giving the distinctive amber brown color. As a bonus, this also means they can stay fresh for a month or longer once opened.
Interestingly, the "10-year" indication on the label does not necessarily mean that the wines used are actually 10 years old or even an average of 10 years old. It simply means that the Port has the characteristics of a single wine that spent 10 years in barrel. To do that, producers blend wines of all different ages together - they could be as little as one year to 15 or more. Same goes for Tawny Ports labeled as 20, 30 and 40-years.
Best served and stored chilled, this is a category of dessert wines that is definitely worth exploring. Let's check this one from Costco out.
