When one discusses the transcendent tag teams of WWE history, the New Age Outlaws, comprised of the charismatic Road Dogg and Billy Gunn, undeniably secure a place at the top. Ascending from mid-card solo wrestlers to legendary status, their dynamic partnership was instrumental in their success.

Their iconic journey in the WWE saw them become six-time WWE Tag Team Champions, integral members of D-Generation X, and ultimately honored with induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019. However, behind the scenes, a moment came in early 1999 that threatened to unravel this prolific pairing.

On his "Oh You Didn't Know" podcast, Road Dogg opened up about his turmoil when WWE's iconic figurehead Vince McMahon shared plans to split the duo. Road Dogg candidly confessed to his emotional reaction, admitting, "I went in and asked Vince to please not split us up because I don't think I can do it without Billy.

Tears might have been shed. And by 'might have,' I mean, I cried." Despite his reputation as an audacious performer, eager to seize the microphone and lead his team, Road Dogg admitted to a deep-seated reliance on his partner, Billy Gunn.

The prospect of stepping into the limelight alone filled him with fear and trepidation. "I was like, no. I need him. It scared me that I would have to do this alone," he lamented.

However, McMahon stepped in to assuage his concerns at this crucial juncture, confidently predicting that both wrestlers would thrive independently.

Despite his boss's assurance, Road Dogg was riddled with self-doubt. "I knew Billy was gonna do great... and I didn't have the same confidence in myself," he revealed. Road Dogg confessed to being a 'future tripper,' someone who anticipates fear about events that haven't occurred yet.

He was haunted by uncertainty about his success and potential failure without the reassuring presence of his tag team partner. Despite his initial fears, Road Dogg managed to carve out a niche for himself as a singles wrestler, winning the Intercontinental and Hardcore Championships.
