Another nice find at Trader Joe's for just $6.99, the Campi Rudi Appassimento Rosso Puglia IGT Passito.
A blend of Negroamaro, Primitivo, Nero di Troya and Sangiovese. It is made in the appassimento method using dried grapes, in this case through a secondary fermentation where the dried grapes are added to the blend. It is from Puglia (the heel of the boot), Italy.
The wine contains 15 g/L of residual sugar and is made by Angelo Rocca & Figli.
Right now, the Campi Rudi Appassimento is available exclusively at Trader Joe's (in the US) and sells for just $6.99. It was also available on Last Bottle recently, but it was $15 - which is one of the reasons we generally don't recommend shopping there. It is imported by Plume Ridge.
Intense ruby color and a complex bouquet with ripe red fruit notes of cherry and plum. Rich and ripe texture with spices and tobacco. Pairs well with savory dishes of game, aged cheese, and BBQ. Serve at 64.4-68F.
15% Alcohol
The 2020 Campi Rudi Appassimento Rosso Puglia IGT Passito opens with a welcoming aroma of dark, raisiny fruit plus leather and a touch of spice.
The wine tastes smooth and well balanced with more dark fruit plus plentiful notes of baking spice and chocolate. It has higher alcohol and higher sugar (at 15 g/L) but it handles both of them well and it doesn't come of as either hot or terribly sweet. It went great with our pizza.
It ends mostly dry and long. We found it to be very similar on day two.
