Emma Signature Bed

You'll know the brand Emma because of its luxury range of top-quality mattresses (some of which are currently 40 per cent off), but did you know there's also a range of bed frames to complete the look? Here's the House Beautiful review of the brand's original Signature Bed frame.

The Original Bed has had a bit of a revamp since it was first launched. It's still only available in two shades of grey, but now you can choose whether you'd like to add a headboard, or some smart underbed storage boxes, giving you some additional flexibility. Now part of a seven-strong range of frame options - including a divan, ottoman and sofa bed among other standard frames - it's one of the brand's midrange price offerings, costing just over £600 for a double.

If you dread picking up a hammer, don't worry. The brand claims that the frame takes no more than 30 minutes to put together, so it's a good choice if flatpack furniture experiences tend to leave you and your partner at war.

The instruction booklet was super clear and made it very easy to go through each step. Happily, it did take only half an hour to put together, which I was impressed by - I've spent a lot longer battling with IKEA frames. Also, while there were two of us technically putting it together, I spent much more time directing my more DIY-friendly housemate than putting in the graft myself, so it's something you could definitely do alone if needed.

Saying that, I would recommend investing in a drill, as I feel it would have taken considerably longer without this bit of kit. While one was included in the kit, I dread the idea of putting together something so substantial with a humble Allen key.

It's clearly a high-quality piece of furniture and it looks very smart when dressed, with its comfy tufted headboard and minimal grey frame. I'm a big IKEA fan but, once up, this was clearly superior to my previous IKEA frame - it looks very grown-up when in situ. It's got a good height to it, too, which makes it a proper statement piece. With my mattress and thick topper on it, it had some real impact in the room.

Mine is the dark grey colour which is probably slightly less versatile than the paler hue, but no less chic. It goes nicely with my oak furniture and looked especially great when paired with a pink-toned duvet set. Storage-wise, I fit six under-bed boxes underneath, and they can be pushed back far enough that they don't detract from the overall look. There are also two handy pockets on either side, which are great for tucking your phone or your book in while you sleep.

This was the real highlight for me. I didn't even realise what impact a good bed frame could have on your overall sleeping experience. I have a spenny Simba Luxe mattress, which was lovely to sleep on before, but after switching to this frame it felt like I had a brand new mattress. I almost couldn't believe what an impact the frame alone had made - it felt like I was sleeping in a fancy hotel. This alone made it worth the money for me.

I don't have any real complaints. My only one quibble would be that, while it was quick and easy to assemble, I'm not sure taking it apart would be such a smooth experience. Why? Well, each slat is held in place with its own little plastic holder which snap into place on the frame. I put one in the wrong place and it was a real pain to remove, so it might take a little longer than you'd like to disassemble it. But if you have no plans to move any time soon then this won't be a problem.

Style-wise, if you're not after a grey bed with a classic tufted headboard, this might not be for you (although Emma does have a version sans headboard, which is currently 40 per cent off!). It would be great to see the colour range expanded.

However, if this isn't a problem for you, and you're looking for a quality frame which can support your mattress and, therefore, you properly, I'd certainly recommend this bed frame. It's lightweight, looks great in my room and is seriously supportive.
