According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there are areas with one public charging point for every 85 electric vehicles.

For the UK average, there are 36 electric cars for every standard public charger, an increase compared to 2021 when it was 31 EVs per charger.

The worst affected area - the North West of England - has 85 electric vehicles to every charger, compared to 49 around a year and a half ago.

Naturally, London was the best-served region with one charger for every 11 EVs, up just one since 2021.

Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the SMMT, told The Times that electric car owners would see their experience "get worse before it gets better".

He pointed directly to the boost in EV sales numbers, saying it was growing faster than the installation of public charging stations.

Mr Hawes also feared that some drivers may switch back to a petrol or diesel vehicle because they cannot rely on a public network.

A percentage of Britons do not have access to off-street parking, meaning that many would have to rely on charging at work or when shopping.

There are more than one million zero emission vehicles on the road in the UK, a large increase compared to 2021, when there were fewer than 750,000.

Zapmap data shows there are 24,909 charging locations across the UK with 42,566 devices, a 37 percent increase since April 2022.

Ben Nelmes, chief executive of New AutoMotive, said: "We know that most EV owners charge at home - and they save money on running costs in doing so.

"However, we need to see the UK's charging network expand so that public charging is convenient for all EV drivers.

"Market certainty is crucial for businesses investing in EV infrastructure. The forthcoming ZEV mandate will provide security by driving the uptake of electric vehicles in the UK, ensuring a rapid expansion of the charging network."

The UK Government is hoping to roll out a Zero Emission Vehicle mandate next year, which will require manufacturers to make a certain percentage of their sales are EVs.

A consultation was launched earlier this year to analyse how the ZEV mandate will work, including how it will affect businesses and whether any exemptions are required.

Mr Nelmes added: "The ZEV Mandate is key to the rollout of more infrastructure across the country. This is why New AutoMotive is supporting the implementation of an ambitious ZEV Mandate in 2024.

"We want to ensure that EV drivers are able to charge their vehicles wherever and whenever they want."
