Nearly a decade after it set the gaming world ablaze and racked up awards, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to sell like hot cakes. From the fascinating world-building to the compelling storytelling, it's a game that has already surpassed the 50 million sales milestone. The additional 25 million copies of the first two installments sold added to the mix, helping The Witcher series achieve a colossal sales figure of 75 million copies globally.

The Witcher 3's prodigious sales can be attributed to a number of factors. The first is the quality of the game itself. It's one of the most GOTY'ed games of all time, right up there along with The Last of Us Part 2 and Elden Ring. It also got a massive popularity boost from the Netflix series, which benefitted the Nintendo Switch version and the recent next-gen update. The last reason, but certainly not the least, is that it's a timeless classic that has a quality that hasn't faded with time as it continues to enchant players, making it a perennial favorite among gamers worldwide.

In comparison to other massive single-player hits, The Witcher 3 has a massive advantage over The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which has a little over 31.5 million copies sold since 2017.

Having said that, the Witcher franchise's success story is far from over. Looking ahead, CD Projekt RED is gearing up to put the franchise in a good position going forward with several more ambitious projects.

From a remake of the first Witcher game to the launch of a new trilogy, the future holds plenty of promise. Interestingly, it's also working on a unique, more stylized Witcher project, developed by The Molasses Flood, which recently experienced a reshuffling due to layoffs.

Outside of its best-selling franchise, CDPR is busy preparing for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, a premium expansion for the 2020 title that may or may not be launched by next month.

CDPR is also busy fielding questions about whether or not Sony is interested in buying the company.

The road head certainly looks promising, albeit fraught with challenges. For one, the team will have to fix its reputation for launching incomplete games, something that started when the quality of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch left a lot to be desired.

CDPR's persistent efforts may have redeemed the game to a certain extent, with a next-gen patch released last year to help the cause.

Moreover, The Witcher's success has inspired a successful adaptation by Netflix, which has already been renewed for a fifth season ahead of the release of the third season next month.

As the franchise continues to grow, the only direction for The Witcher is up.
