Australian boxing is enjoying a renaissance on the world stage at the moment.

It seems like every month in 2023 has featured an Aussie fighting for big honours in front of an international audience.

Five Aussies can currently count themselves as major world champions - holding either a WBC, WBA, WBO or IBF belt and two of those hold the prestigious Ring title, recognising them as the best fighter in their respective divisions.

We take a look at which Aussies currently hold belts, how they won them and when they're defending their crowns.

Opetaia etched his name into Australian sporting folklore when he overcame a badly broken jaw to defeat Mairis Briedis on the Gold Coast.

The southpaw showcased his sublime boxing skills as well as his otherworldly toughness to take the IBF and The Ring titles off the Latvian.

His jaw now healed, Opetaia is in discussions with Mateusz Masternak, the mandatory challenger for his IBF title, for his first defence.

The bout is yet to be locked in but an announcement is expected shortly.

Titles: WBO and The Ring bantamweight world championship

Having twice fought for a world title and come up short, Jason Moloney achieved a lifelong dream when he outclassed Vincent Astrolabio to claim a majority decision victory.

Moloney's win was made all the more impressive when he revealed he had suffered an injury to his right hand early in the fight.

There has been no confirmation as yet regarding how long Moloney will be out with the hand injury or who he will be fighting next.

Title: Interim WBO super-welterweight world championship

Champion since: March 12, 2023

Defences: 0

Next fight: Carlos Ocampo (June 18)

While it is technically a world title, Tszyu won't be satisfied until he is recognised as a full-fledged world champion.

The Sydneysider was scheduled to fight undisputed champion Jermell Charlo for all the belts earlier this year but an injury to the American saw Tszyu look elsewhere.

The 28-year-old took on former champion Tony Harrison in Sydney in March and claimed the interim WBO strap with a stoppage in the ninth round.

Tszyu will attempt to defend his interim title when he takes on tough Mexican Carlos Ocampo on the Gold Coast.

Should he get past Ocampo, he has been ordered to face Charlo before September 30.

Title: IBF bantamweight world championship

Champion since: March 3, 2022

Defences: 1

Bridges capped a remarkable rise in the sport when she defeated Maria Cecilia Roman via unanimous decision.

The former maths teacher who gained attention with her eye-catching weigh-in attire proved she more than belonged at the world level.

In her first defence, the Blonde Bomber defeated fellow Aussie Shannon O'Connell in a spiteful contest, stopping her countrywoman in the eighth round.

Bridges had surgery on a hand injury suffered in that fight, keeping her out of the gym for several months but she's back training now for her next fight which is still to be confirmed.

Title: IBF super-bantamweight world championship

Champion since: April 20, 2022

Defences: 1

Next fight: Ellie Scotney (June 10)

Just like Phar Lap, Cherneka Johnson may have come from New Zealand but we'll happily claim her.

Johnson won the title by defeating Melissa Esquivel via majority decision in Melbourne.

Her first defence came against former champ and fellow Aussie Susie Ramadan on the undercard to the rematch between Devin Haney and George Kambosos in Melbourne.

Johnson suffered a nasty cut on her forehead in that fight but battled through to claim a unanimous decision victory.

Despite holding the belt, Johnson will travel into her opponent's territory when she looks to defend her title against Ellie Scotney in London on June 10.
