Flats planned for Stoke-on-Trent land empty for 11 years

How the apartments in Tunstall would look

Plans have been put forward to overhaul a disused piece of town centre land with a four-storey apartment block. Proposals have been submitted for the block of 11 flats sandwiched between Piccadilly Street and McGough Street in Tunstall.

And developers say the scheme would overhaul an 'unkempt' plot which 'contributes little to the area'. An application put to Stoke-on-Trent City Council says the land was listed on a register of the city's brownfield sites.

Applicant Executive New Homes, a Cheadle-based firm, say the land is in a 'poor state' and is 'in desperate need of development'. They add how planning consent was previously given for a three-storey block.

A design and access statement in support of the application states: "It will stand no taller than the previously permitted development on the site, as the additional apartments have been accommodated within the roof space of the building. The scale and massing of the proposed development will therefore not have any materially greater impact on the character and appearance of the area than the previously approved application on the site.

"The site is noted to occupy a highly sustainable location within easy walking and cycling distance of local day-to-day facilities and public transport connections."

It is believed the land has stood empty since around 2012 when the previous building on the plot was knocked down.

"The site currently comprises a vacant parcel of land, located at the corner of Piccadilly Street with McGough Street. The site is unkempt and contributes little to the character and appearance of the area."

The scheme - which is for all one-bedroom flats - will now be considered by planners at Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

Listed below are other planning applications published online by North Staffordshire councils during the past fortnight.
