Atopic dermatitis is a condition which closely resembles seborrheic dermatitis. Psoriasis is another condition which mimics seborrheic dermatitis. Cutaneous candidiasis, acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus are the other conditions which form the differential diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis could also be a close differential for it.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition of infancy of unknown etiology. It affects infants within the first few months postpartum as cradle cap or napkin dermatitis. It spreads widely via the flexures and it clears by about 12 months of age. Adult pattern seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic erythematous scaly dermatosis, more prevalent in middle aged adults. The disorder is usually mild, and responsive to therapy. In severe and atypical cases, a variety of other entities should be considered in the differential diagnosis, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infections, rosacea, lupus erythematosus?ocid=feed-health-article" target="_blank">systemic lupus erythematosus, discoid lupus erythematosus, perioral dermatitis, and irritant contact dermatitis. Less common but more serious disorders, such as histiocytosis-x, immunodeficiency disorders, and nutritional and metabolic diseases, may be considered in the child whose disease does not spontaneously resolve or respond satisfactorily to local therapy.

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disorder that courses with itching, reddened plaques on the affected skin and scaling, usually affecting areas of folds (such as the anterior region of the elbows, posterior region of the knees) and scalp, but it can affect any part of the body, in some cases. It is an immunomodulated disorder and has important differential diagnoses with other conditions that affect the skin such as psoriasis, rosacea, lupus or pemphigus foliaceus, tinea corporis, tinea versicolor or allergic reactions to primary irritants such as metals or chemicals.
