Step 1: Pop the coin(s) in a bowl

Let's see how to go about cleaning coins with vinegar.

. Take a clean bowl and place the coin inside.

Yes, we know that vinegar has quite a strong smell, but we are using it for cleaning coins at home, not making perfume. Thanks to its strong acidity (which is perfect for disinfecting dirty coins), white vinegar can be the ideal solution to clean dirt, oils and corrosion off coins and letting their natural shine come to life.

. Pour some white vinegar into the bowl, just enough so that it completely covers the coin.

. After about 3 minutes, you should be able to see a slight change in the coin's appearance as it becomes lighter and cleaner. But let's give it some more time.

. And after 10 minutes, you should be able to see a drastic improvement.

. If your coin is still too dirty for your taste, you can leave it longer - 30 minutes, even. However, when it comes to cleaning coins with vinegar, do not leave your coin in the vinegar for longer than overnight, as you then risk damaging the metal (and the coin's value) beyond repair.

Extra tips for how to clean coins:

. To get rid of light dirt and grime, soak your coins in warm water with a dash of liquid dish detergent mixed in.

. Afterwards, you can gently scrub each coin with a soft toothbrush before rinsing it in clean water and drying it.

. If you simply don't have time for cleaning coins at home and you want to avoid a build-up of oils and dirt on your coin's surfaces, remember to always handle coins by their edges. Never press your fingers directly on the coin's face and back.

. Once you've allowed the coin to properly soak in the white vinegar (and you can clearly see a difference compared to when you first added the vinegar), you can take it out of the bowl.

Extra tip: how to clean coins with baking soda

. Take two empty bowls.

. Add your coin to the one bowl and fill it with cold water until the coin is submerged.

. Measure about 1 teaspoon of baking soda and then pour it into the other empty bowl.

. Dip your cleaning toothbrush into the baking soda and use it to scrub the coin that's in the water bowl. The baking soda's cleaning agents should be able to remove dirt and grime without damaging the metal of the coin.

. Afterwards, be sure to rinse the coin under clean water before using a soft cloth for drying.

To further remove that build-up of dirt and grime on the coin, some scrubbing is in order. And for this, you can either use steel wool or a toothbrush (which, obviously, you don't intend on using for brushing teeth afterwards).

. While holding the coin between your fingers (and without touching its face and back), start scrubbing the surfaces.

. After the scrubbing, rinse the coin in clean water and dry it with a soft cloth.

Can you see a clear difference between the coin's current look compared to how it was before you dropped it into the vinegar?

With these steps, you should be well on your way to giving those old, dirty coins a fresh new look.

Extra tip: cleaning coins with coke

But keep in mind that there are other ways on how to clean coins, such as cleaning coins with coke. That's right, your favourite soft drink could also be the key to cleaning coins at home. That's because coke's phosphoric acid is quite adept at banishing the oxides that lead to tarnish and corrosion.

. Place the coin in a clean bowl and fill it with coke, making sure to completely submerge the coin.

. Allow the coin to soak in the coke for approximately 5 minutes before checking to see if the corrosion is gone. Should the coin still look and feel grimy, place it back in the coke, but don't leave it for longer than 15 minutes, otherwise the metal can be dissolved by the soda.

. After removing it from the coke, rinse the coin in clean water before drying it with a soft cloth.
