JP McGovern scored in Sheffield Wednesday's 2005 play-off win

Only 14 men have been part of a play-off winning Sheffield Wednesday side.

And only a select group of four have netted on such an occasion. JP McGovern is among that select band, having scored the opening goal in the memorable 4-2 success over Hartlepool United back in 2005.

He's now offered an insight into the mentality of the dressing room that season - and hopes that it will be replicated exactly 18 years on this coming Monday when the Owls face Barnsley for a place in next season's Championship.

McGovern, who played in the recent Rio Spurr Steel City derby charity match, said: "That desire has got to come from within the team. There will be guys in that dressing room that'll help with that in terms of bringing it together.

"I was fortunate to play with a few good captains, in a great dressing room, and we were just starting out so it was easy for us to get that. But I remember a few of the older lads saying that we should enjoy it because you never know when it's going to happen again, and when you get older yourself you realise that that is the case."

McGovern had a brief spell on loan across the city at Sheffield United prior to his Hillsborough move in 2004, so he knows how passionate the respective fanbases are. After watching their biggest rivals seal a promotion of their own this season, Wednesdayites are anxious to complete their own elevation and avoid there being a two-division buffer beween the two teams next term.

McGovern added: "I don't think anyone wants that at all - that's quite clear. The team got a record points tally so it's not like it's been a bad season.

"That rivalry has always played a part but when you're at a club you have your own business to deal with really. If you're a Wednesday fan then all you care about is Wednesday. If the other side loses obviously you can have a bit of banter but the bottom line is you want your team to be doing well."
