This is how long it takes for oats to go bad

Are you someone who eats oats every day? Then you won't have to worry about keeping an eye on the expiry date. But for others, who only make Anzac biscuits once a year in April, this one's for you.

If you're not already storing them in a sealed container, preferably air-tight, that's step one. Next, place the Tupperware in a cool, dry place, and it should be good for one to two years.

What about flavoured oatmeal?

For oatmeal with added ingredients like dried fruit, they will expire faster at around the six to nine-month mark.

What about unstabilised oats?

Most oats from your local supermarket will be stabilised. This means that they've been dehusked, steamed and toasted which helps stabilise the grains and thus have a longer shelf life. However, if you buy your oats unstabilised they will turn bad a little faster than the more processed types.

They might taste a little sour or be discoloured, but as long as you don't see any mould, the oats should be fine to eat. But to be on the safe side, store your oats in a glass or metal container in the fridge.
