Former Leicester city defender turned pundit Martin Keown has said that the team will be one of the 'most talented' squads to suffer relegation from the Premier League if the club goes down this season.

City currently sit in 19th place in the table, two points adrift of Everton in 17th. That gap could be increased to five points before City are next in action when they take on Newcastle at St James' Park on Monday.

If that is the case, then only a win over the Magpies would see the side take the fight against relegation to the final day of the season. City host West Ham a week on Sunday with the team hoping that there is something riding on that game.

Dean Smith's side fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Liverpool last Monday, a defeat which put their fate back into the hands of other teams. It followed a demoralising 5-3 loss against Fulham just a week earlier.

Keown, who played 18 times for City during a six month spell, has now assessed the situation at the club, saying that failings in the transfer window is one of the reasons City could be playing Championship football next season.

"To put it simply, if you lose 22 games in a season, you do not deserve to stay in the Premier League," he wrote in his Daily Mail Column . "No squad can be called too good to be relegated but this Leicester side would surely be one of the most talented groups of players to go down.

"Leicester under Brendan Rodgers were for many seasons a club to be admired. This generation of players were able to bag the two major domestic trophies - the FA Cup under Rodgers in 2021 and the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri in 2016.

"Failure to build on that recent success in subsequent transfer windows could cost Leicester their Premier League status. The club have plateaued."

Should City be relegated, there is expected to be an exodus of players. The likes of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes have already been linked with a move away from the club, while Youri Tielemans and Caglar Soyuncu are among those out of contract in the summer.
