Why Destiny 2 Fans Should be Looking Forward to May 24

It's no secret that Destiny 2 has been a great success for Bungie over the course of its six-year lifespan, although this was not always the case. The first year of the game was met by a massive content drought that wasn't really solved by the first two expansions in Destiny 2, Curse of Osiris and Warmind, with the state of the game being almost critical in terms of concurrent players and general opinions. The game managed to massively recover with a gradual and consistently more focused live-service approach, which is one of the main reasons behind Sony's acquisition of Bungie, as the company wants its new subsidiary to work alongside other studios - and this might show as early as the May 24 PS Showcase.

There is no clear indication about what sort of games will make the cut in the May 24 PlayStation Showcase and whether there will be projects where Bungie aided development, but Bungie itself might have something to show. The studio has announced plans for new IPs coming as early as 2025, and then a recent Destiny 2 survey shared with some players might indicate that the saga is not ending anytime soon.

Destiny 2 is one of those rare success stories of a game that launched in a semi-broken state and then found glory in time, but Bungie has also been working on something else behind the scenes. Known as "Matter," which could be Bungie's first new IP after Destiny, has been in development for a while now, and it would only make sense for the studio to reveal it now at the May 24 PS Showcase to build hype ahead of its release, presumably in 2025. While this is just speculation, it's likely that Sony will want to show what the seeds of its acquisition are blossoming into.

Not only that, but an increasingly high number of Destiny 2 veteran developers have announced that they were moving away from Bungie's iconic looter-shooter onto different projects. The only one that the company has officially announced is indeed Matter, and players were quick to make the connection. There are various rumors surrounding this game, from it being a big RPG to it being a PvP-focused game, and since both of these traits are common to Destiny 2, it's likely that players will feel at home within this new IP if anything.

Another plausible candidate to make an appearance among the many games at the May 24 PlayStation Showcase could be Bungie's rumored mobile game, which could then also become available on consoles, much like titles the caliber of Genshin Impact. This seems more likely by the day, too, as Bungie recently shared a survey with some Destiny 2 players asking whether they would play another Destiny game were it to be released. This wasn't necessarily the entire scope of the survey, but it does make one wonder if a spin-off is indeed around the corner - possibly showing its face as early as next week.

Even if Bungie doesn't share news regarding its own project, it's not impossible that Destiny 2 fans will get to see the impact of the studio on other PlayStation titles, with one of the most palpable candidates being Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Multiplayer. Based on what Naughty Dog shared about the game, it could not only show up at the May 24 Showcase, but it could very well turn out to be a live-service title - one of those that Bungie has been helping with since the acquisition. Either way, there's a good chance that Destiny 2 players will see something they like on May 24.
