It should not be surprising to learn that as large a place as it is, with such a storied history and so many disaster, that the Grand Canyon is home to several ghostly legends. The most famous is probably the "Wandering Woman," an apparition who haunts the North Rim crying, in a white dress bedecked with flowers. South Rim spirits include a pair of boys who terrorize a gift shop, a supernatural presence at the site of a deadly helicopter crash, and the ghost of a hotelier who haunts the halls of his old establishment.
This hiker, though, says what she encountered was not a ghost, but a demon.

"I'm trying to process what happened," the hiker said. "I just had the most terrifying experience at the Grand Canyon."
She explains that she and her boyfriend were stargazing near the rim, and were overcome with a horrible feeling of dread. He insisted on going back to the car, despite the fact that it was a pitch black, twenty minute walk through the forest.
Soon, they began to hear a strange whistling sound coming from the trees.
And-this is the truly terrifying part-her boyfriend's feeling of dread turned to panic, and he began trying to walk deeper into the woods, away from the car and visitor's center and closer to the strange whistling sound.
She managed to convince her boyfriend to make it to the car, which was when they began hearing loud, panting noises, and the sound of something running at them.
Was it demonic or just a mountain lion? Int he comments, people say that mountain lions can make whistling sounds, and that her boyfriend's disturbing impulses can probably be chalked up to his panicked response. Maybe he was even-if subconsciously-reacting to the proximity to a predator on the hunt.
The alternative-that they barely avoided being attacked by a demonic entity-Is far too terrifying to contemplate.
