Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes served as the main event of the WWE Backlash premium live event from Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Saturday night.
The match saw Rhodes hit an outside dive during Lesnar's entrance. There was an exposed turnbuckle thanks to Lesnar, who dominated most of the bout with his countless suplexes. Lesnar was busted open after being sent head first into the exposed turnbuckle. Rhodes with a series of cutters. Lesnar fired back with an F5. Lesnar had Rhodes in the kimura lock, but Rhodes managed to pin his shoulders down for the win.
Rhodes came up short when challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 39. The night after the event on Raw, Rhodes wanted a rematch, but Reigns wasn't interested in giving it to him. Paul Heyman said that a tag team match could be arranged, although Rhodes would need to find someone that worked Mania and if they lost then they couldn't challenge for the title as long as Reigns was champion.
Out walked Lesnar, who originally agreed to team up with Rhodes against Reigns and Sikoa only to attack Rhodes for ten minutes straight. It ended when Lesnar gave Rhodes an F5 on top of steel steps. The following week on Raw, Rhodes issued the challenge for Backlash.
On the April 17 edition of Raw, Adam Pearce made the match official during a segment. After Rhodes demanded that Lesnar come out, he did and security stood in the way of each other. Lesnar taunted Rhodes on the stage as Rhodes tried to get to him, but couldn't. Rhodes said that Lesnar could wear a cowboy hat but he isn't a cowboy, he's a coward.
