Russia fired up to 24 attack drones against Ukraine overnight, including over the capital Kyiv, the day after Moscow accused the nation of a drone attack on the Kremlin.

"The invaders launched up to 24 Shahed-136/131 attack drones... The Air Force of Ukraine, in cooperation with other air defence units, shot down 18 attack drones," the air force said on Telegram.

"Tonight the aggressor again launched a comprehensive air attack on the capital. (In the capital the alert lasted more than 3.5 hours)" the head of Kyiv's military administration, Sergiy Popko, said on Telegram. He added that all missiles were destroyed by air defences and that there were no casualties, though there was some debris scattered across parts of Kyiv.

In the Black Sea city of Odesa, 12 out of 15 drones were destroyed by air defences, but three hit a university compound, according to the southern military command. There were no casualties.

Meanwhile in Russia, a drone attack struck an oil refinery and caused a fire, according to the state news agency TASS.

The latest intelligence update from the UK's ministry of defence examines the fire which broke out at a fuel depot in Volna, Russia, on Wednesday.

They have said that the attack "follows a pattern of Russian fuel sites being damaged since the start of the year".

This morning there has been another alleged attack on a fuel depot in a settlement near Volna, according to state media, with the fire already extinguished. The Ilsky refinery is one of the largest oil refineries in Southern Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelensky is to meet with the leadership of the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Thursday, his spokesman Sergiy Nykyforov confirmed to AFP.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian president Vladimir Putin in March over a war crime charge, in relation to the alleged forced deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia.

Anton Gerashenko, adviser to Ukraine's interior ministry, shared footage on Twitter which he claims shows "Russia showed the launching of drones targeted at Ukraine for the first time".

"Russia attacked Kyiv and Ukraine with drones last night - the fourth massive attack on Ukrainian cities in the past week," he wrote on Twitter.

The Russian ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov has said that "the punishment will be harsh and inevitable" following the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin, the state news agency TASS reported.

Anatoly Antonov reportedly said on Wednesday: "How would Americans react if a drone hit the White House, the Capitol or the Pentagon? The answer is obvious for any politician as well as for an average citizen: the punishment will be harsh and inevitable."

Mr Antonov criticised the response from the US to the 'attack': ""The U.S. did not find it possible to recognize the obvious thing - it was a terrorist action planned by the Zelensky regime and an assassination attempt targeting the President of the Russian Federation."

He added: "The theses that this act of terrorism was allegedly a "false flag operation" are blasphemous and deceitful. That is, it was Russia itself that staged a provocation against the heart of our statehood?!"
