Similar basement collapses were reported over the weekend due to heavy downpours, fire officials said.

FREEHOLD, NJ - The basement of a Freehold home collapsed Monday morning after heavy weekend downpours caused flooding and a partial collapsed wall in the residence, authorities said.

The basement collapse took place at a residence on Hibernia Way at around 11:30 a.m., the East Freehold Fire Company and abc7 reported, with abc7 adding that a "construction official" deemed the home uninhabitable until it could be further inspected.

The outlet also said the homeowner reported hearing a cracking noise at the time of the collapse.

Firefighters remained at the scene Monday until 2:30 p.m., Freehold fire officials said.

Asbury Park firefighters, who assisted Freehold fire crews at the scene, said in a Tuesday Facebook post that they were called to assist mutual aid partners at a "handful" of basement collapses throughout the weekend, including one in Atlantic Highlands on Saturday. The firefighters union credited hours of high-risk training involving confined spaces, building collapses, rope rescues, trench collapses, and water rescues to its success.

"We're always happy to work seamlessly with our mutual aid partners as we serve our communities," the union said.
