A Brisbane family have told of the horrifying moment they were shot at during a road rage incident that injured a teenage girl on a major highway.

While driving in a Ford Focus along the Logan Motorway on Anzac Day, Todd Power said a Toyota LandCruiser began dangerously swerving and braking in front of him as he moved around a truck.

The family eventually passed the Toyota, but the driver followed them.

"At that stage, he rammed the back of my car," Power said.

As he tried to pull over, the family were then nearly run off the road three times, before their 14-year-old daughter Kayla was shot.

Police believe the weapon used was an air rifle, which shoots pellets rather than bullets.

"Next thing, you know, there was a spark and a bang out his passenger window. And my daughter was screaming that she's been hit," he said.

Power said the family called police after the driver shot at them, while he drove as far away as he could.

"We ended up pulling up at a place where there were cameras and people around, just in case he followed us," he said.

Police and paramedics arrived and rushed Kayla to hospital. The family said forensic teams found a "bullet" in the back seat of the car.

The family said police told them they were still searching for the car, which had stolen registration plates, and he had also allegedly rammed into another car with an eight-month-old boy in the back seat.

Kayla's mother Rachel said the incident was terrifying, and her daughter now did not want to travel in a car or catch public transport.

"She says she's quite scared that somebody else could do that to her again which is affecting her schooling," she said.

Police were still searching for the man.
