A man shared his astonishment upon seeing a DoorDash receipt for a delivery that resulted in a $22.93 bill for a drink that typically costs $6.50 in a now-viral TikTok video.
Posted by user @k_waltzz, the video has amassed more than 600,000 views as it showed the breakdown of the various fees associated with the delivery cost, including a delivery fee, a small order fee, and a "dasher tip."
According to DoorDash, fees can vary for different restaurants that work with the food delivery company, but they are intended to help pay for Dashers and operate the platform.
"You can see the fees from the checkout screen so you'll know what the total is for your order before paying," the company said. "You'll also receive a receipt showing a breakdown of the order subtotal, applicable taxes and gratuity."
The fees include menu items, tax, a tip to the Dasher, and delivery and service fees, depending on the restaurant.
A receipt for a drink that costs $6.50 was displayed in @k_waltzz's video. Beneath the cost for the drink was a $7.99 delivery fee, a $0.98 service fee, and a $2.50 small order fee.
"What is the need for a small order fee?" @k_waltzz asked. "The whole point of the order was the...small order. I'm done, I'm done."
Many viewers were equally stunned by the order's total and shared their thoughts in the comments section.
"If they're gonna charge us more can they at least make it reasonable," a viewer wrote.
"Not the delivery being more than the order," another viewer commented.
"The small order fee took me out," a comment read.
One viewer shared that they faced a similar situation that caused a pricier bill than they anticipated.
"I bought tea for me and two other coworkers and it was $49," they said.
Some said that the additional fees have dissuaded them from leaving a tip for the delivery driver.
"I get so tempted to not tip the delivery guy because I'm getting straight up robbed," a TikTok user commented.
"Bro if there is a delivery fee and services fee with a small order fee I'm not tipping," wrote another.
Newsweek reached out to @k_waltzz and DoorDash for further comment.
A viral video sparked a conversation in March when a packaged order was not getting picked up because the customer did not leave a tip.
Another video ignited a similar conversation in April as a pile of bags containing orders were seen stacked on the floor because the customers reportedly did not offer a tip for them.
Meanwhile, one DoorDash customer said earlier this month that drivers did not pick up her order because she left a $1.50 tip.
