Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that the "economic blitzkrieg" launched against Russia by Ukraine's allies "has not worked" due to the response of the Russian authorities.

"I want to stress once again that Russia is safely dealing with external pressure, with what could be called financial and technological aggression from some countries. The economic blitzkrieg tactic has not worked. It is already obvious to the whole world, and to them as well," Putin said, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Putin thus compared the current sanctions of the United States and its allies with the 'blitzkrieg' or lightning war, a military strategy that gave quick victories to the Nazi army during World War II.

Specifically, Putin highlighted the "prompt and effective protective measures, support mechanisms for key industries and enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses." The aim was to maintain jobs and give "concrete support to people".

The United States and its allies have imposed economic sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine launched on February 24 and Europe fears the definitive cut-off of Russian gas supplies in the face of the imminent winter, while Russia warns of the "global storm" that the sanctions would be provoking.
