In a grim moment, four days after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her children today walked behind her coffin during the processional to the historic St. Giles Cathedral.
At 2:30 p.m. U.K. time, the queen's coffin was carried for one mile, from the Throne Room at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, to St. Giles' Cathedral. And behind it, walked the late monarch's four children: King Charles III, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.
Anne's husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, also walked with them, while Queen Consort Camilla followed in a car with Prince Edward's wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
The queen's casket was draped in the Royal Standard of Scotland and carried by an honor guard from the Royal Regiment of Scotland and the historic Royal Company of Archers.
From Scotland, the queen's coffin will be taken to London, where a state funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey on September 19.
Today, for the ceremony, King Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward were dressed in military uniforms, while Prince Andrew, who is no longer a working royal, wore a black suit and tie. To the five events to honor the queen-including her funeral-being held during the royal period of mourning, working members of the royal family must wear military uniforms. Prince Andrew, though not working, was granted an exception, and will wear the uniform to his late mother's final vigil. Prince Harry, however, was not given the same treatment, BAZAAR.com learned, as he was not granted permission to wear his military uniform to any of the five key ceremonies being held for his late grandmother.
