The Simpsons has been hinting that Lisa might be queer for a while. Now, a new episode set in the future shows that Lisa doesn't end up with just one female partner, but two.

Of course, the episodes set in the future aren't necessarily canon in the series (whatever canon is for a show that has stayed mostly frozen in time for decades) and child Lisa has shown interest in boys in the past, too, especially Nelson Muntz.

So what's going on then? Is it something that the show will make canon outside of these "what if?" futures?

The show's boss Al Jean revealed that Lisa being queer in the series is a "possibility," as he exclusively told Digital Spy: "In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, that is definitely a possibility for Lisa's life. She is open and, you know, somebody who loves everything. Why not?"

Jean had also teased that Lisa could be "polyamorous" several years before she was seen with two female partners on the show. At the time, he told the Metro: "I see Lisa as President and possibly polyamorous."

However, it doesn't look like there are plans to include Lisa as queer in the canon anytime soon, instead the show will explore various futures for the character.

Jean continued: "In an episode in the future, it's actually her and Nelson, which is again, a little bit of a leap! We have a show coming up where in the future Lisa might get together with Nelson and features Simu Liu from Shang Chi as Lisa's husband."

Lisa's voice actor Yeardly Smith previously stated that she doesn't think present-day Lisa will have a queer storyline, saying: "I 'm totally open to the possibilities of her exploring other ways of life... but she's eight!"

Teasing about what is coming up in the show's future that we can expect, Jean added that:"We have two Halloween shows this year-our regular Treehouse [of Horror] and then a version of It, the Stephen King book, that's a full length episode. So there's a lot of really exciting stuff."
