Harry and Meghan to remain in the UK ahead of Queen's funeral

The couple will remain in the UK for a period of royal mourning which extends seven days after the funeral.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will remain in the UK ahead of the Queen's funeral and stay for a further seven days after for the period of royal mourning, according to a spokesperson for the couple.

Queen Elizabeth's state funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on September 19.

Prince Harry, 37, and Meghan Markle, 41, were in the UK for a brief visit which was scheduled to include appearing at the WellChild Awards when the Queen passed away on September 8. Their attendance at the event was subsequently cancelled.

The couple's children - Archie, two, and Lilibet, one - reportedly remain at their home in Montecito in the US with their carers and Meghan's mother Doria Ragland.?

Harry and Meghan were in Germany promoting the next host city of the Invictus Games when they received the call that Queen Elizabeth had taken a turn for the worst.

The pair boarded a flight to London. Harry then flew to Scotland solo, arriving too late to say goodbye to his beloved "grannie." Only King Charles and Princess Anne made it in time to farewell the monarch.

Harry and Meghan joined Prince Harry and Kate Middleton this week to view floral tributes that had been placed outside the gates for Her Majesty.

The couples also took the time to interact with members of the crowd who expressed their condolences to the royals.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace confirmed: "Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, it is His Majesty The King's wish that a period of Royal Mourning be observed from now until seven days after The Queen's Funeral.

"The date of the Funeral will be confirmed in due course.

"Royal Mourning will be observed by Members of the Royal Family, Royal Household staff and Representatives of the Royal Household on official duties, together with troops committed to Ceremonial Duties."

During King Charles' first speech as monarch, he made mention of his youngest son which is hoped to help heal the rift between the couple and the Royal Family.?

"I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas," he said.

This statement was seen as a confirmation that the pair will remain in the US working outside of the monarchy, but also as a blessing for their future endeavours.

It is understood Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry maintained their close relationship, despite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigning as senior royals in 2020. They even named their daughter after Her Majesty, choosing her nickname Lilibet.

Harry and Meghan have settled in Montecito, California were they have launched their own organisation, Archewell, signing lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify.

Following the Queen's death, Meghan delayed the release of the latest episode of her podcast Archetypes. It isn't known if the release of Harry's tell-all memoir will also be delayed.?
