A superb second-half performance saw Gloucester overturn their biggest ever Premiership deficit to defeat Wasps 27-21 in the opening game of the new Gallagher Premiership season.

After a lacklustre first-half display, the Cherry and Whites looked down and out as Wasps raced into a 21-0 lead at the break.

However, the home side flew out of the blocks and Louis Rees-Zammit opened the scoring sprinting 90 metres to score a sensational solo try that kicked the hosts into gear.

Albert Tuisue's barnstorming home debut inspired the home side as three more tries to earn Gloucester a hard-fought bonus-point opening day win.

Rugby writer Sam Rhymes takes a closer look at the individual performances from the the Cherry and Whites.

The versatile back marshalled the skies well. Chances in attack were few and far between, but he fed off scraps pretty-well all things considered making 33 metres from his 5 carries. Deputised well for the absent Argentine Santiago Carreras who is away on international duty with Argentina in the Rugby Champions.

After a subdued first half, it looked as though the Welsh international was in for a quiet afternoon, as chances came at a premium for the winger.

But it wasn't long into the second-half when the 21 year-old flyer set Kingsholm alight displaying his sparkling pace to race in from 90 metres out. He looked to be struggling with a re-occurring niggle throughout the afternoon after jarring his back but played through it and was a threat whenever Gloucester got the ball in his hands. Very encouraging for the Kingsholm faithful to see him back on the scoresheet.

Got undone by a superb right-foot step courtesy of Charlie Atkinson for the opening try but recovered well. Quiet afternoon going forward making just three carries, but much like his centre partner, his defence proved invaluable on more than one occasion.

Will feel disappointed in his positioning for the third try where he slightly overran the play but his defence otherwise top notch. Remained abrasive in his carrying in his efforts to get his team go-forward, a couple handling errors will have disappointed the midfielder.

Showed rapid pace to make a world class cover tackle on the half-hour mark yet failed to impact the game in the way we are used to during the first-half due to Gloucester's collective failure to get him involved.

A mistake free-performance from the winger highlighted just how reliable a player he has become and there is plenty more in the bank for Thorley to unleash this season. 7

Struggled to control the game in the way he got so used to last campaign as his side spent 77% of the first-40 inside their own half, a stat that goes a long way to explaining why they struggled to impose themselves on the game early on.

Missed two conversions that could have proved crucial, but fortunately they did enough. Otherwise, a decent first outing for the Scottish international who did well to spark the team into action early in the second-half when he could have dropped off.

Tidy box-kicks from the base and Gloucester look a more threatening side with him at scrum-half. At times looked a touch frantic when his side needed a platform, but the game opened up and suited him more after the break. Took his try well with astute support line.

Ever-reliable influence in the loose and made a constant mess of Wasps' breakdown while he was involved. Wasn't allowed the time or space to run riot as he did at times last season but dragged in multiple tacklers every time he did carry.

Came off after 32 minutes with an apparent HIA.

Premiership debut for the 21 year-old, and an afternoon to remember in the face of a strong Wasps outift. He made a large chunk of the 135 of tackles his side were forced into across the afternoon, and made his presence known in attack getting around the pitch. Still plenty to come from the young openside this year and beyond.

Standing in as captain for Lewis Ludlow, it wasn't a headline grabbing performance for the blindside-flanker, however his contribution was absolutely pivotal on both sides of the ball. Destructive with ball in hand as he bulldozed his way through contact multiple times and backed up his back-row partners with a superb defensive display.

Symptomatic of his side in the first half, failed to dominate during the early exchanges. Grew into the game and was solid in the loose, an average outing for the towering lock. 5.5

Set the tempo for the hosts with crunching earlt tackle, continued to stay in the fight and richly deserved his try on 73 minutes with a powerful carry to crash over from short distance. 14 tackles show the size of his effort throughout the afternoon. 7.5

Rock solid at scrum-time as we have come to expect from the veteran, worked as hard as anyone else on the pitch, hard graft against a relentless opposition. 6

Wavered at lineout time, especially when the crucial chance was stolen right on half-time. However, hit back with a beautiful offload that set Rees-Zammit away for the vital score. 12 tackles for Cherry and White's hooker. 6.5

Outstanding last-ditch tackle on Joe Launchbury to deny the visitors an early score and backed it up with plenty more shuddering hits. Displayed his carrying capabilities to play a huge part in Chapman's try when he burst 30 metres and offloaded to Tuisue.

Another reminder to England head coach Eddie Jones of his talents. Very impressive.

60'. The Argentine brought his usual dynamism to Kingsholm, whilst providing a rock-solid set piece for his side to play off. Reliable as ever.

60'. Injected the game with power and a ruthless edge upfront that saw his team home courtesy of two driving maul tries. Impressive.

62'. Partnered up alongside his front row replacement Rapava-Ruskin to swing the game. Hard graft in abundance as Gloucester's scrum increasingly dominated.

64'. One very strong carry stands out as his big contribution, amongst some brave defence that helped the hosts over the line. Very encouraging signs for a man hungry for more Premiership exposure.

32'. What a canny signing this will prove to be. Signed for his destructive carrying abilities, but the Fijian's superb handling skills came to the fore on multiple occasions. 4 carries and the same amount of tackles in a game-changing cameo explains why the Shed crackled with excitement every time this man got near the ball. Deserved man of the match from BT Sport.

60'. Nothing spectacular but did well to continue his sides charge back into the game.

63'. Experience showed with some direct carries and some deft touches, invaluable in those situations for George Skivington.
