T?he coffin carrying Queen Elizabeth II has arrived in Edinburgh following a six-hour journey from Balmoral Castle.

Her Majesty's coffin will now lie at rest inside the palace and then proceed to St Giles Cathedral tomorrow, to allow people to pay their respects for 24 hours.?

The late Queen had stayed at the palace only weeks before in late June for what is known as Holyrood Week, or Royal Week, where she attended a number of events alongside her son, the now King Charles III.

Meanwhile, King Charles has now officially been proclaimed across the Union.? He will travel to Scotland tomorrow (on Monday).

The Queen's cortege received a guard of honour by the King's Bodyguard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers) as it entered the palace.

Staff who worked at the palace gathered in the courtyard to greet the Queen's cortege.

Moments earlier, the convoy had made its way through Edinburgh's famous Royal Mil?e before entering the palace.

Earlier, ?thousands of mourners lined streets in Scottish towns and cities throughout Sunday, as the cortege made its way from the Balmoral Estate to Edinburgh.

A seven-car cortege left Balmoral at 10.07am local time (7.07pm AEST) which included the Princess Royal, her husband Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the minister of Crathie Kirk and a representative of the Lord Chamberlain's Office.

The Queen's coffin was draped in the Scottish Royal Standard, which differs from the Royal Standard used in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and elsewhere.

The Royal Standard for Scotland features two quadrants for Scotland compared to just one on the Royal Standard.

Those quadrants are made up of a gold banner with the Scottish red lion.

The standard is flown at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Balmoral Castle when the monarch is not present.?

Resting on top of the standard was a wreath of flowers picked from Balmoral.

They include dahlias, sweet peas, phlox, white heather and pine fir - all which have a special significance to the late Queen.

The Queen's coffin will remain at the Palace of Holyroodhouse until Monday.

On Monday afternoon, the coffin will travel by procession to St Giles' Cathedral, accompanied by King Charles III and members of the royal family.

On Tuesday, Princess Anne will accompany her mother's coffin on a flight to London.

From there it will travel to Buckingham Palace, and be witnessed by King Charles and Queen Consort, Camilla.

On Wednesday, the coffin will be taken on a public procession through central London, and then will be laid in state at Westminster Hall. It will remain there for the next four days.

On Monday, September 19, the Queen's coffin will be removed from Westminster Hall, and her funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey.
