Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start from pole position at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix after he put in a storming lap in qualifying when it mattered most to claim top spot ahead of championship rivals Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen.

It then got even better for the Monégasque driver as nine drivers had their grid-place penalties applied, which dropped his rivals further down the pecking order ahead of the action at Monza.

"It is a very busy week and there is a lot of pressure around the team to be able to perform at such a good level," Leclerc said after qualification, acknowledging Ferrari's recent high-profile strategic errors.

He'll be joined on the front row by Mercedes' George Russell, who is followed by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo in P3 and P4 after the McLaren pair defied expectations around the famous track in northern Italy on Saturday.

Elsewhere, title front-runners Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Sainz start in P7, P13 and P18 respectively after taking penalties. Britain's Lewis Hamilton also starts from the back of the grid after taking a new power unit.

There'll be a minute's silence ahead of today's race as the drivers and teams pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who passed away on September 8.

45 minutes to lights out: It definitely feels like today's Italian Grand Prix is Leclerc's to lose doesn't it. With his pole position yesterday coupled with the penalties dished out to his closest championship rivals, the Ferrari man could easily dash off into the distance early on in the race especially as he's surrounded by slower cars.

That said, if he doesn't break away quickly then Verstappen will definitely be lurking close behind. Even though the Dutchman is starting P7 this afternoon, he's in scintillating form of late and managed to win from even further back in Spa just a few weeks ago..

1 hour until lights out: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the 2022 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
