The royal family regularly receive beautiful bouquets of flowers during public appearances, but what happens to the many blooming bunches once they head home?

According to Town and Country, when the royals are given flowers in the UK, they are handed over to their staff or security until their public appearance is over. They then decide whether to keep them or donate them further to other organisations.

If they are on a tour away from home, they often bring the flowers back to their hotel rooms to display the beautiful bunches in vases. Since they often receive so many, lots of the flowers are donated to local hospitals and charities in the areas they are visiting.

The royals also regularly choose to donate flowers from events they organise. For example, at The Duchess of Sussex's baby shower, guests took part in a flower arranging class. Here, they donated the bunches made to Repeat Roses, a New York City charity which delivers flowers to those in hospitals and care homes. Similarly, for Harry and Meghan's May 19th wedding last year, the couple donated their beautiful wedding flowers (created by floral designer Philippa Craddock) to various hospices and women's refuges including St Joseph's Hospice in Hackney.

Alongside flowers, members of the royal family are also given many other gifts. According to royal protocol, any other gifted items must be given over to security, where everything will undergo a test. If they pass the inspection, the royals can then choose whether to give these to members of staff (if they are under £150) or donate them to other charities close to their heart.

Most recently, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex asked members of the public via their joint Instagram account to make donations to various charities, instead of buying gifts for the birth of their first child.
