A 1:20.922 puts him 0.358s ahead of Charles Leclerc.

Everyone has now set a time which means these are the drivers in the drop zone: MAG, BOT, STR, MSC, VET.

The Aston Martin struggling here. Looking very loose on the exit of the corners.

Not everyone has set a lap time so not worth telling you who is in the drop zone.

They are practicing the tow... Sainz crosses the line first with a 1:21.348 but Leclerc behind him beats that by 0.068.

Lewis Hamilton, ahead of George Russell, goes seventh with Russell into third, half a second off the pace.

Perez's time of 1:22.085 is the time to beat and he does that... just, by 0.062s.

De Vries goes fourth, briefly before Latifi beats him by just under a tenth of a second. Not a bad effort on your first qualifying lap in F1.

For reference, last year's pole time was a 1:19.555 by Valtteri Bottas. Not sure we will see a time in the 1:19s... probably not the mid-1:19s...

Tsunoda beats Stroll's time by nearly 1.5s. Out come the Red Bulls and the Ferraris. In fact everyone but Lance Stroll is out on track.  Schumacher gets a bit slidy in the first chicane as Vettel kicks up some gravel on the exit of the second chicane.

Ferrari getting themselves into a position to win and being the firm favourites is one thing... actually being able to pull it off is another. They have been so far away from maximising their potential this season it has been unfunny.

Stroll crosses the line with a 1:24.23 to go first.

Stroll has had a much-improved qualifying record recently. The bar was pretty low for much of the season, though.

Lance Stroll the first man out there, for Aston Martin.

Predictions? I think De Vries could well beat Latifi. Would that really be that surprising?

Can't see anyone but Verstappen being fastest... that said, with all the grid penalties and the effect that a tow gives here, there could be some shenanigans in the final sector. Remember the farce of 2019?

The yellow on the rear wing really helps. It's usually just plain black.

He held off Hamilton to take his second Formula One victory then in a thrilling race. With all the penalties around him he has a good chance of at least being in the mix this weekend. With the pace of the Red Bull, though, you expect that Max Verstappen will be a fixture...

There will also be another minute's silence on the grid ahead of the race tomorrow.

This is another way of saying who, on average, has been the fastest in qualifying.

Appendicitis, surgery and no racing isn't what I was expecting this weekend!

Negatives:

- Missing out on what looks like a strong weekend for us

- Pain

Positives

- Weight reduction for Singapore

- Cool scars

There is a three-week gap or so until the Singapore Grand Prix, so he has a relatively generous amount of recovery time.

Porsche and Red Bull have ended talks over Porsche joining Formula One, but the German sports car brand remains interested in entering the racing series, it said on Friday.

"The two companies have now jointly come to the conclusion that these talks will no longer be continued," Porsche AG said in a statement.

Volkswagen's former chief Herbert Diess said in May its Porsche and Audi brands would join Formula One, long dominated by the automaker's German rival Mercedes-Benz .

Media reports had suggested long-standing talks between Porsche and Red Bull were stalling due to a gap between how much control the Porsche wanted and what Red Bull was prepared to give.

Red Bull principal Christian Horner ruled out a Porsche takeover last Friday and said any partnership would have to be on the Formula One team's terms.

"The premise [of discussions] was always a partnership on eye-level, which would include the team alongside a motoring partnership. This could not be realised," Porsche's statement said.

"With the changes to regulation, the racing series remains an attractive prospect for Porsche which we will continue to monitor," the statement added.

And welcome to our coverage of qualifying for the 2022 Italian Grand Prix from Monza. Final practice finished not that long ago and, surprise surprise, it was championship leader Max Verstappen who was fastest. The Red Bull driver was 0.347sec faster than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez six-tenths behind his team-mate. Carlos Sainz was fourth for Ferrari.

The pecking order very much feels as expected, though Friday was perhaps a bit more promising for Ferrari than they expected. That, however, was likely because Red Bull did not show their true pace. Does it really matter? With both championships all but over? Well, this is Formula One race in Italy and Ferrari are in contention for victory, so yes it does.

There is a complicating factor, however, in who might be favourite for the race as there are a frankly ludicrous amount of grid penalties throughout and particularly at the front.

So far, we have a rough idea of what the grid penalties will be:

And that is just the ones we know about.  Drivers could and may well add more to their current penalties after qualifying and some may occur before the race on Sunday. So who knows? Regardless, the situation means that the quickest man in qualifying might not be the pole-sitter. It's the situation we had in Spa two weeks ago and something needs to be done to address it. It's not a quick or easy fix but there should be an easier and simpler way that does not render qualifying this meaningless.

In other news, it was announced this morning that Williams' Alexander Albon will not be taking part this weekend due to appendicitis. He is replaced by Nyck de Vries, who took part in FP1 for Aston Martin yesterday, who finished a respectable 14th in FP3. With all the penalties he has a good chance of starting in the top 10 tomorrow.
