Rick and Morty Made Rick Look Even More Terrible

The following contains spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 6, Episode 1, "Solaricks," which debuted Sunday, Sept. 4 on Adult Swim.

There's no doubt Rick Sanchez is one of pop culture's most divisive characters. Despite being positioned as a savior in Rick and Morty, he's mostly been toxic side -- not only to the galaxy, but especially to his family. That's usually the case with most of the Ricks that are boxed into Multiverse, thanks to the Central Finite Curve barrier. Any Rick variant can't be trusted.

Sadly, that's the approach Morty has had to take over the course of the Adult Swim series. In Season 6, Episode 1, "Solaricks," Morty was left questioning Rick's intentions again. The episode could be hinting at a particularly nasty plan Rick has to defeat Weird Rick -- one that would make him look more despicable than ever.

Season 6 opened with Rick and Morty struggling to recover after Evil Morty blew up the Citadel and busted out of the Curve. Rick once again pursued Weird Rick -- his nemesis from the Cronenberg Dimension seen in Season 1. The plan to lure Weird Rick in didn't work out, which led to Rick attacking Weird Rick's lair. Morty begged him to let the vendetta go; he didn't care about Weird Rick being his blood relative. He just wanted the revenge-seeking Rick to remember the adventures they had together and that no matter what, the two of them were family.

Rick seemingly agreed to forget his rivalry when he, Morty, Jerry (voiced by Chris Parnell) and the duo of Beth and Space Beth got to the Parmesan Dimension to eke out a new life. But after burying their doppelgängers, Morty pondered if Rick was using him as bait again. Rick said Weird Rick didn't care about his family, which is why he abandoned Beth and Diane. Even if Rick were using Morty, Weird Rick wouldn't come becaue he was indeed "the real deal."

However, since Weird Rick did kill Jerry in the Cronenberg Dimension, he does have some connection to his family. It could be possible that he'll try to end the bloodline by coming to finish off his grandson. Lying about such a thing would be right up Rick's alley; he's fooled himself in the past about letting go the deaths of his wife and child. But that lie would prove trust won't ever exist between Rick and Morty, while putting the household in danger again.

With Morty not having any more living relatives from his world, there's no way he'd like the return of this villain he's so desperately trying to forget. That said, an intricate, drawn-out plot would be on brand for Rick, too. But such a massive betrayal would cause irreparable damage to his relationship with his grandson -- to the point Morty might end up hating all Ricks for good, and no viewer would be able to blame him.

Rick and Morty airs Sundays at 11:00 p.m. on Adult Swim.
