Former Reading striker Marc McNulty has admitted that his career has been "a bit of a nightmare" since he was at the club.

The striker signed for Reading in July 2018 after impressing with Coventry City and helping the Sky Blues to promotion via the League Two play-offs, with McNulty signing a four-year deal with the Berkshire club.

However, his move did not work out, with McNulty playing just 17 times for Reading and scoring one goal, as he fell out of favour and went out on loan to Hibernian (twice), Sunderland and Dundee United.

His loan spells brought varying degrees of success, scoring eight times in 17 appearances in his first stint in Scotland with Hibernian, before five goals in 21 appearances for Sunderland and four strikes in eight matches in his second spell with Hibs. He then netted eight times in 54 games for Dundee United over two seasons on loan, but he is now a free agent after leaving Reading and is looking for a new club.

But speaking to The News, McNulty has opened up on how he has not really enjoyed his football in recent years, with the 29-year-old admitting that he would have loved to have gone back to Portsmouth, where he enjoyed a positive loan spell in the 2015/16 season, scoring 12 times in 34 games for the Blues.

Indeed, he said he spoke to the then Portsmouth CEO Mark Catlin while at Reading about a move back to the south coast, but said it never quite materialised.

"Since Reading it has been a bit of a nightmare, to be honest," McNulty said. "I don't want to keep bringing up their name because it's something in the past, but it has been a bit stop-start in the last couple of years. Hopefully wherever I end up this year I can reboot my career again.

"It's not that I regret joining Pompey permanently, otherwise would I have ended up at Coventry, scoring all those goals and winning promotion? Rather it's the disappointment of not having the chance to go back and play for them in front of those fantastic fans.

"Since moving to England at the age of 21, I've had constantly changing managers. Nigel Clough was sacked, Paul Cook took me on loan, Nigel Adkins was sacked, Chris Wilder took over, while I was with Mark Robins for a year.

"Then Paul Clement signed me at Reading and they had five managers and three caretakers over four years, while I also had a few loans during that time. I've never had the stability of being at a club longer than a year or two. I thought I had it at Pompey once under a great manager, but unfortunately that didn't turn out either."
