People around the world are looking for ways to honor Queen Elizabeth following her passing this week at the age of 96. One particularly celebratory way to do it is with a toast- specifically with the Queen's favorite cocktail, a Dubonnet and gin.

If you're concerned about having to get your hands on a number of rare and royal ingredients to make the drink, don't worry. The Dubonnet and gin is actually quite easy to make. The cocktail calls for just three ingredients: Dubonnet, which is a French aperitif, gin, and a slice of lemon.

How exactly did Dubonnet and gin come to be the Queen's favorite cocktail? Food & Wine reports that the drink was initially a favorite of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Her liking for the gin-based cocktail, which was popular in the 1920s, was ultimately passed down to her daughter.

Although the two women shared a love for the cocktail, how they preferred their Dubonnet and gin did differ a bit. The Queen Mother's cocktail had more alcohol thanks to equal parts Dubonnet and gin. Queen Elizabeth, on the other hand, preferred a 2:1 ratio of Dubonnet to gin. It seems that she was ahead of the times with the low-ABV trend.

If you plan on honoring the Queen with a Dubonnet and gin this weekend, and in the coming days, you can mix up the cocktail by adding Dubonnet and gin to a mixing glass with ice. After giving everything a good stir, you'll then strain the ingredients into a rocks or coupe glass. And don't forget to add a slice of lemon!
