The Rams have got off to a decent start in League One

Data experts are forecasting automatic promotion heartache for Derby County.

FiveThirtyEight's SPI ratings, which have evaluated every League One team's overall strength based on their opening seven games, have Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday filling the top two spots come the end of the season.

The Rams, despite currently sitting in ninth, are predicted to complete the season in third on 83 points, four behind the Owls, with Ipswich a further three ahead.

The SPI gives every team an offensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to score against an average team on a neutral field, and a defensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to concede.

There is some good news for Rams fans, however, with FiveThirtyEight's Supercomputer awarding them the highest percentage chance of promotion from the four play-off contenders.

Liam Rosenior's side are awarded a 38% chance of a return to the Championship, just clear of Portsmouth (35%), with fellow top-six finishers Barnsley and Peterborough on 24% and 18%, respectively.

At the other end of the table, Burton are forecast to finish bottom on 39 points, with the supercomputer assessing Derby's chances of a second successive relegation at less than 1%.

Here's how they are predicted to finish:

1. Ipswich Town 90pts (+40) (promotion chances: 57%)

2. Sheffield Wednesday 87pts (+37) (48%)

3. Derby County 83pts (+29) (38%)

4. Portsmouth 83pts (+28) (35%)

5. Barnsley 77pts (+22) (24%)
