The White House on Wednesday warned new British Prime Minister Liz Truss that any attempt to "undo" the Northern Ireland Protocol included in the Brexit agreements would pose an obstacle to the United States and the United Kingdom sealing a free trade agreement.

The spokeswoman for the US Presidency, Karine Jean-Pierre, admitted that, technically, "there is no link" between the two concepts, but urged the new British government not to follow the path once taken by Boris Johnson.

"Efforts to undo the Northern Ireland Protocol would not create a favorable environment and basically this is where we are with the dialogue," Jean-Pierre told the media, according to Bloomberg news agency.

Already on Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden stressed in his first telephone conversation with Truss "the importance of reaching a negotiated settlement with the European Union" after London in June tabled legislation that would unilaterally annul the Northern Irish protocol.

The new tenant of Downing Street has defended this Wednesday before the House of Commons that she wants a "negotiated solution" to the current disputes, which leave up in the air a series of commitments that keep Northern Ireland within the European common market.
