Robin Has Become DC's Spider-Man In The Worst Way

This post contains SPOILERS for Robin #17

Following the end of Damian Wayne's Robin series, it's beginning to feel as though the current Boy Wonder is turning into DC's version of Spider-Man (and not in a good way). While Robin laid a lot of groundwork with teases that Damian would ultimately choose a trajectory for his future (whether good or bad), the son of Batman is no closer to becoming someone beyond Robin like Dick Grayson's Nightwing or Jason Todd's Red Hood. For all the growth and maturity Damian has gained in his recently concluded series, he's still being kept in the state of arrested development as far as what he'll ultimately evolve into in the DC Universe.

In DC's Robin, Damian Wayne chose to leave Gotham City behind after his falling out with Batman over the death of Alfred Pennyworth. Robin then chose to enter the Lazarus Tournament, a contest of the world's greatest killers involving resurrections on Lazarus Island that were secretly feeding the very real demon behind the Lazarus Pits and Ra's al Ghul himself. Despite being faced with his own inner demons simultaneously, Damian found new allies while facing his great-grandmother Mother Soul. Likewise, Damian also reunited with his father amid al Ghul's permanent death and the resulting war between Damian's mother Talia and Deathstroke (all of which took place in the Shadow War crossover). While Damian had some strong reconciliation with his father, he still chose to return to Lazarus Island, making it his new home and a refuge for those in need.

Even though Robin #17 is the final chapter of this current series, the new issue from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Roger Cruz neglects to give Damian any sort of definitive future. Although it's now been years since Damian was an active Gotham vigilante and sidekick to Batman, he's still going by Robin with no hint of a new name change or more unique costume. While Damian certainly gained some solid growth and maturity in this series, it seems DC is determined to keep Damian Wayne a Robin (even though Tim Drake also goes by Robin and does work in Gotham with Batman). As such, Damian is beginning to mirror a similar state of stasis which Spider-Man has been in for years thanks to Marvel's hesitation to let him move forward in any sort of significant fashion.

While Damian claims he's still trying to figure out who he is, it's hard not to see his next adventure as somewhat regressive. Although Robin is ending, Damian Wayne will soon be in conflict with his father yet again in the upcoming Batman vs Robin event. According to the five-issue miniseries' synopsis, the Lazarus Demon known as Nezha will apparently be possessing Robin. It also teases that Alfred is coming back from the dead. While Alfred's return is exciting, it essentially undermines Damian's conscious choice in earlier issues to not to bring him back, a sign of growth that he was letting go of his grief and moving forward, not wanting to give Alfred the darkness that inherently comes with a Lazarus resurrection. Likewise, Robin and Batman just reconciled in Shadow War which will now be ignored thanks to this upcoming corruption that will turn Damian dark (though it will likely be against his will and not by choice).

While there could be something more permanent that comes out of Batman vs Robin (and hopefully there will be), things don't seem all that progressive for Damian Wayne's Robin in the current DC Universe. Although there was some growth in his now concluded series, nothing definitive came out of it in regards to who Damian Wayne will become as a post-Robin hero. For good or for bad, Batman's son has grown out of the Robin mantle and should be allowed to develop his future (rather than being held in a kind of developmental purgatory like Spider-Man.
