On Wednesday, Apple revealed the new iPhone 14 series: The iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

But before you decide whether or not you want to buy an iPhone 14, you should know what it's offering - especially since the base version of iPhone 14 isn't as big of an upgrade as past releases. That's why we've put together this guide to the iPhone 14's flagship features.

Here are the iPhone 14's six best features, from upgraded cameras to redesigned screens.

Preorders for every version of the iPhone 14 start on September 9th. The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be available on September 16th, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be available on October 7th. The four models will cost $799, $999, $1,099, and $899 respectively.

A new subscription service lets your iPhone 14 make emergency calls even when you don't have internet or cellular service. It does this by connecting to satellites flying high above you, which then relay your location to emergency services back on Earth.

When you connect, your iPhone will ask you a few questions about your condition: Are you lost? Hurt? Are you alone, or is there someone with you? These are all to make sure that your iPhone contacts the appropriate service station to get you help.

You can use the service in non-emergency situations too. If you're out of cell and internet range, you can use satellites to share your location with Find My, so your contacts know where you are.

The satellite service will be free for two years with any purchase of an iPhone 14. It's not known yet what it'll cost after that.

Every iPhone comes with new camera upgrades. And although the rumors about 8K recording quality ended up being false, the iPhone 14's cameras are still pretty powerful.

The cameras on every version of the iPhone 14 are better at recording in low light, as well as capturing more vibrant colors. The front camera in particular is finally getting an autofocus feature, meaning that it'll be better at taking clear selfies even when the subjects are different distances away.

Apple is adding an "Action Mode" to the Camera app. Made for videos with a lot of motion, Action Mode will stabilize the camera to reduce shaking.

The iPhone 14 Pro models are also getting a new 2x zoom lens, which can record in 4K quality. And the primary camera has 48 megapixels, among the best of any smartphone.

After years of requests, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are getting new always-on screens.

Even when the device is locked and the screen is "off," your iPhone's screen can still display the time, your widgets, and live activities. You might even still see your lock screen wallpaper too, depending on the picture.

The always-on display does all this while using much less battery power than if it were actively on. You get to stay on top of things while keeping your iPhone alive for longer.

Just like the new Apple Watch Series 8, the iPhone 14 is getting a force sensor that'll be used to sense when you're in a car crash.

The sensor only activates when you're driving, and detects when you come to a sudden stop, the air pressure changes due to the airbag expanding, and there's a loud crashing noise. Once detected, your iPhone will offer to call emergency services for you - if you don't or can't respond, it'll call automatically.

All four iPhone models are receiving upgraded internal chips. These are the central pieces of hardware that handle your iPhone's most important functions, and make these new models the fastest iPhones so far.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have an A15 Bionic chip, like the iPhone 13 before them. But the chip's gotten some updates - Apple claims that the graphics portion (the GPU) is 18% more powerful, and the CPU and neural processors are better too.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is where the real upgrades come out. The Pro models are running on a new A16 Bionic chip, which is about 40% faster than the A15. It also uses less power than the A15, meaning less strain on the battery and other internal components.

And now, the biggest change: The notch is gone.

Well, mostly gone. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus still have it - but the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have replaced it with a pill-shaped cutout that Apple is calling the "Dynamic Island."

The Dynamic Island is a standalone cutout that's surrounded by working pixels, and houses the selfie camera and Face ID sensor. It's also responsive, growing and shrinking based on what app you're using.

Some apps, like Lyft and Apple Music, can display information inside of the Dynamic Island even while you're using other apps. Others can use the Dynamic Island to send smaller and less obtrusive notifications.

Apple intends this change to "blur the line between software and hardware," turning the once infamous notch into its own exclusive feature.
