Netflix may have been hit hard by a loss of subscribers, leaving the streaming platform to cancel many animated shows and more, but the company is still doing its best to put together some great content. It has been announced that Netflix will be the home of a new version of All Quiet on the Western Front. The film will be based solely on the novel of the same name, which was written by Erich Maria Remarque in 1929. There is a film adaptation that was released in 1930, making his Netflix venture a remake of that seminal film. There is also a teaser trailer, which you can see below:
All Quiet on the Western Front follows the life of a German soldier by the name of Paul Bäumer who is now three years into World War I. The gripping trailer is a much-updated version of a film that many of us watched in school at some point. Paul and his friends dream of glory and honor after signing up for the war, but they soon realize that death is all that they are given. The trailer bounces back and forth between Paul being a young man that is smiling and worry-free, to a beaten-down soldier in the army who must keep watching his friends perish. WWI was one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the world, and this trailer nails the trauma perfectly.
It is a bit odd that no attempts to remake All Quiet on the Western Front have not been attempted since 1930. Then again, the film is a classic, so it may have just stayed in the confines of history as one of the more perfect adaptations. Still, it is great that Netflix is producing this new remake. It looks to be as chaotic as the first film was meant to be, but now we are given the 2022 level of special effects. This one is surely going to be a hit. Starring as Paul Bäumer is Felix Kammerer. He is joined by Daniel Brühl as Matthias Erzberger, Albrecht Schuch as Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky, Moritz Klaus as Frantz Müller, Aaron Hilmer as Albert Kropp, and Edin Hasanovic as Tjaden Stackfleet. The film is directed by Edward Berger.
Edward Berger famously directed Jack, Deutschland 83, and All My Loving. This will be the first time that All Quiet on the Western Front is reimagined by a German director. The initial film was American made, though the novel was written by a German novelist and revolved around German soldiers. It will be interesting to see what Berger brings to the table in this new remake.
All Quiet on the Western Front will make its debut at Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022. It will then head to Netflix on October 28, 2022. The original film holds the honor of the first film to win an Academy Award for Best Director and Outstanding Production. It is preserved by the Library of Congress and remains a culturally significant film. Berger has some big shoes to fill, but from the above trailer alone, we can see this remake going down as one of the best remakes ever made.
