Thor: Love & Thunder's Weirdest Cameo Is A Funny Civil War Callback

Thor: Love & Thunder saw some beloved characters from Thor's previous movies back, but it also had a weird yet fun, easy-to-miss cameo that connects to what Thor did during the Civil War conflict. Thor made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 in his first solo movie, simply titled Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, after which he joined the original Avengers team in The Avengers, where he helped them take down his brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and the Chitauri army as they attacked Earth.

After that first adventure with his fellow Avengers, Thor returned in Thor: The Dark World, widely regarded as one of the worst MCU movies to date, and after a second adventure with the team in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the God of Thunder went through necessary changes in Thor: Ragnarok, where Taika Waititi brought out Chris Hemsworth's comedic skills and let Thor's personality shine. Thor later took part in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and given his newfound popularity with the audience, he became the first Avengers to get four solo movies, returning in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor was famously absent from the conflict in Captain America: Civil War that fractured the original Avengers team, as at the end of Age of Ultron, he left Earth to learn more about the Infinity Stones and their whereabouts. In order to fill the void of Thor's absence and introduce the audience to Taika Waititi's vision for the character, Marvel released a series of short films titled Team Thor, in which Thor moved to Australia and shared a flat with Darryl (Daley Person), who was subtly brought back in Thor: Love and Thunder in a fun yet easy to miss cameo appearance.

The Team Thor shorts are set between Captain America: Civil War and Thor: Ragnarok, and they were all about Thor having some "me time" and lying low for a while, so he became roommates with Darryl, a normal guy with an office job. The shorts saw Thor trying to adapt to normal, human life while also trying to "solve" the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America through e-mails. This was also a weird process for Darryl, as he had to adapt to having an Asgardian as a roommate, and one that didn't exactly understand how life on Earth worked, but he definitely did his best. The Team Thor shorts aren't MCU canon, so Darryl's existence wasn't mentioned after that, but he was just brought back in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Darryl played a tour guide in New Asgard in Thor: Love and Thunder, with Daley Pearson calling Darryl's return a "glow-up" on Twitter. Love and Thunder executive producer, Brian Chapek, spoke about Darryl's sneaky cameo at the movie's premiere, telling Marvel that bringing Darryl back was one of the first ideas they had when making the movie and that it's "amazing to have him back in the movie". As mentioned above, the Team Thor shorts aren't canon, as Thor spent that post-Age of Ultron time learning about the Infinity Stones and traveling through space, so it's unclear if he met Darryl at some point or if the now-canon Darryl is just a guy who got a job at New Asgard but hasn't met the God of Thunder yet. It's to be seen if Darryl will return in Thor 5 or other MCU movies, but for now, his cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder was a fun treat for those who followed Thor's adventures on Earth during Civil War.
