A man thought to be in his 20s has died after being shot by officers in a south London police chase.

The Metropolitan Police announced the death after earlier saying it had referred itself for investigation over the incident, involving specialist firearms officers in Lambeth.

Officers had stopped a 'suspect vehicle' following 'tactical contact' around 9.51pm on Monday evening.

The man was left with gunshot wounds when a police firearm was discharged in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill.

He was given first aid by cops at the scene before being taken to hospital.

But doctors could not save him and he died shortly after midnight.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have been contacted, in a move that follows protocol.

No one else was harmed in the incident with saw The London Ambulance Service and air ambulance assist.

Cordons and road closures are in place as an investigation continues.
