Bryn Morris scored a brilliant long-range effort to put Grimsby Town ahead before Harry Clifton followed up with a similarly-great goal to seal the three points at Rodney Parade

Paul Hurst cut a delighted figure after his Grimsby Town side beat Newport County 2-0 at Rodney Parade and offered his thoughts on the goals that won the Mariners their third away game on the bounce in League Two.

The victory was also Town's first at Newport for over nine years and their first in a Football League game since 1981, which illustrates the magnitude of the result, which was coupled with a complete performance from Hurst's side.

Bryn Morris and Harry Clifton's strikes were excellent for different reasons, the former showing precision and power in his striking of the football to find the back of the net from range with the latter jinking his way through defenders to slot home.

Overall, it was a great afternoon's work which made the long journey from North East Lincolnshire worth it for Hurst, his team and the travelling support, which the Town boss was happy to reflect on.

"They're [Newport] tipped to be a decent team this year," said Hurst. "But, for large portions of the game, I thought we were the better team. We had to withstand the long throws, amongst other things, but in general play, I don't think they did too much.

"Sometimes you win a game when you don't really deserve to, but that wasn't the case today, so all credit to the players. They did what we asked them to do, which was get on the ball early and pass it because we thought we could create problems for them.

"There have been occasions in other games where we have had to make tactical changes mid-game because it wasn't working, but today, we made Newport change which means we were doing something right and causing them problems.

"On the ball, we were better, can be better still, but the signs are promising. Styles make games, but we felt that if we wanted to get the ball down and pass it today, we could, and that is what we did.

"The fear at half-time was that they would make the changes and the players would be getting a telling off which would make them come out guns blazing in the second half, but we got on the ball early again and stopped them doing that.

"[Bryn Morris' goal] wasn't something we'd worked on; not that it was anything particularly clever. We know Bryn can strike a good ball, and I am pleased for him to get that goal because his overall performance was great.

"Harry [Clifton] got into a great position for his goal; it was almost like watching Lionel Messi! He could've added another one and then they went down the other end and almost scored. He works extremely hard for the team and gets himself in good positions which is why he gets these scoring opportunities."
